Cornerstone Apostolic Temple's Heartwarming Success: Homeless Hot Food Drive at YMCA Newark & Vicinity Shelter

In Newark, on April 27, 2024, something truly remarkable unfolded at the YMCA Newark & Vicinity shelter. It wasn't just a typical Saturday; it was a day filled with warmth, compassion, and the power of community coming together. Cornerstone Apostolic Temple orchestrated a Homeless Hot Food Drive that left an indelible mark on all who participated and benefited.

As the sun beamed on that April afternoon, volunteers from Cornerstone Apostolic Temple were buzzing with anticipation. With hearts full of love and arms ready to serve, they set out to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness in our community. Our mission was clear: to provide not only nourishment for the body but also solace for the soul.

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

The preparations for this event were meticulous. From coordinating meal plans to rallying volunteers and gathering donations, every detail was carefully considered. The night before was full of boiling, chopping, slicing, dicing, assembling and cooking with love and fully unfolded in an afternoon of smiles, service, giving of oneself and love. Special shoutout to the CAT members who helped to cook while laboring over the stove the night before; Sister Tadia, Sister Feesha, Sister Lynn and Sister Nicole! Whether it was picking up food, loading and unloading, assembling ingredients, cash donations, cleaning and every single thing in between -- we equally value everyone who played an essential part to make this event a success.

The aroma of freshly cooked meals filled the air, beckoning those in need to come and partake in the warmth and hospitality awaiting them. Volunteers, adorned with anticipation and enthusiasm, stood ready at their stations, eager to serve with humility and grace.

But it wasn't just about handing out food; it was about fostering a sense of belonging and dignity. Each person who walked through the doors was greeted with a smile, a kind word, and a hot meal lovingly prepared.

As the afternoon progressed, there was no shortage of food or enthusiasm. CAT Volunteers worked tirelessly, ensuring that every person received not only a meal but also a sense of hope and humanity.

The impact of the Homeless Hot Food Drive extended far beyond the walls of the YMCA shelter. It was a beacon of light in a world often overshadowed by darkness. For the recipients, it was a lifeline, a reminder that they were seen, heard, and valued.

But perhaps what was most profound about this event was the spirit of unity that permeated every interaction. Volunteers and recipients alike came together, bridging the divide that often separates us. In those moments of connection, stereotypes were shattered, and barriers were broken down.

As the day drew to a close and the last meal was served, there was a palpable sense of gratitude and fulfillment in the air. Cornerstone Apostolic Temple had not only fed the hungry but had also nourished the soul, leaving an indelible mark on all who had been touched by their kindness.

As we reflect on the success of the Homeless Hot Food Drive, let us carry its lessons forward. Let us remember the power of compassion, community, and collective action. And let us never forget that, in serving others, we also serve ourselves.

“and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58:10-11 (NIV)

In the end, it wasn't just about food; it was about love. And that, my friends, is a recipe for true success.

With Love, Minister Charlette Amons
